Positive Inspirations: Mind, Body, and Spirit

I sat in silence, and listened carefully to a man speaking from a CD Player, as he introduced my virgin ears to words never heard of, a vision never seen by, or a world never existent to myself. The voice beckoned me to sit cross-legged, hands resting on my knees and facing upwards, with my eyes gently closed and my tongue touching the palate of my mouth. My emotions were blank, as I knew nothing of what I was about to experience. He continued to speak, asking of me to raise my hands facing outwards and picture the Earth in front of me, then give it and the people living in it peace, love, joy and happiness. The experience was intense, and when it was over, my eyes must have been replaced, because I saw the world in a completely different way.
It’s no surprise that there is a growing interest among the Kuwaiti population in the concept of “Mind, Body, and Spirit”. In realizing that medicine is not the only way to heal yourself from ailments, people began to look elsewhere, and many have discovered that even though you’re physical body may seem healthy, your emotions or “inner body” will eventually begin to reflect onto your physical health. Although scientists are skeptic about spiritual and holistic healings, they cannot deny the fact that the emotional well-being of a person indeed has a direct effect on his or her health. So, what are ways to help improve your emotional well-being?
Let’s start with the “Mind”. Being in the correct mind set can completely change your life. Consider optimists; they manage to find an easy way out of any difficulty, and more importantly they don’t allow obstacles to get in the way or destroy their emotional wellness. It’s all about positive energy! The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne, shows you how positive thoughts can make you achieve what you desire. Not only do positive energies help you emotionally, but they also help the people that surround you, and you will eventually realize that people are much nicer to you and are attracted to you because of your positivity!
Next is the “Body”. Being good to your body involves sufficient physical activity, and the right choices of food. Ever heard of the saying, “We are what we eat?” Well, it’s true! Increasing the amounts of healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables, and reducing the amounts of fat and simple sugars in your daily diet are effective ways to keep your body healthy. In addition, walking for half an hour to an hour a day will not only help you burn calories, but will also reduce any stress that may be affecting you. As a Dietitian, I have heard many excuses from people who don’t exercise, but the main reason is, “I don’t have time!” or, “The weather is bad!” If you use your positive energy, and are determined enough to make it your goal to exercise every day, you will always find the time and the right place to do it. Consider making that one of your daily missions, and see the wonderful impact it will have on your life and health.
Last, but certainly not least, is the “Spirit”. One effective way is to perform meditation, which is what I described in my opening paragraph. Meditation teaches you how to be patient, how to reflect your troubles and worries into something pleasant for you and others, and is a different experience for every individual. It is also an effective way of teaching yourself how to focus on what is important and what is not. Most importantly though, meditation helps you discover yourself; who you really are and what your true potentials can be.
That first day of meditation really did change my life, as it was the first “exposure” to what I like to call “The World of Positivity”. Today, people see me differently and always ask me what my secret is. What you just read is my response. It is important to remember that there will always be times of difficulty, and that positive thinking will be your way out! Now the only question is, are you willing to make the change?
