Mind, Body, Spirit

Positive Inspirations: Mind, Body, and Spirit

Written By: Noura Marafi

I sat in silence, and listened carefully to a man speaking from a CD Player, as he introduced my virgin ears to words never heard of, a vision never seen by, or a world never existent to myself. The voice beckoned me to sit cross-legged, hands resting on my knees and facing upwards, with my eyes gently closed and my tongue touching the palate of my mouth. My emotions were blank, as I knew nothing of what I was about to experience. He continued to speak, asking of me to raise my hands facing outwards and picture the Earth in front of me, then give it and the people living in it  peace, love, joy and happiness. The experience was intense, and when it was over, my eyes must have been replaced, because I saw the world in a completely different way.

It’s no surprise that there is a growing interest among the Kuwaiti population in the concept of “Mind, Body, and Spirit”. In realizing that medicine is not the only way to heal yourself from ailments, people began to look elsewhere, and many have discovered that even though you’re physical body may seem healthy, your emotions or “inner body” will eventually begin to reflect onto your physical health. Although scientists are skeptic about spiritual and holistic healings, they cannot deny the fact that the emotional well-being of a person indeed has a direct effect on his or her health. So, what are ways to help improve your emotional well-being?

Let’s start with the “Mind”. Being in the correct mind set can completely change your life. Consider optimists; they manage to find an easy way out of any difficulty, and more importantly they don’t allow obstacles to get in the way or destroy their emotional wellness. It’s all about positive energy! The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne, shows you how positive thoughts can make you achieve what you desire. Not only do positive energies help you emotionally, but they also help the people that surround you, and you will eventually realize that people are much nicer to you and are attracted to you because of your positivity!

Next is the “Body”. Being good to your body involves sufficient physical activity, and the right choices of food. Ever heard of the saying, “We are what we eat?” Well, it’s true! Increasing the amounts of healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables, and reducing the amounts of fat and simple sugars in your daily diet are effective ways to keep your body healthy. In addition, walking for half an hour to an hour a day will not only help you burn calories, but will also reduce any stress that may be affecting you. As a Dietitian, I have heard many excuses from people who don’t exercise, but the main reason is, “I don’t have time!” or, “The weather is bad!” If you use your positive energy, and are determined enough to make it your goal to exercise every day, you will always find the time and the right place to do it. Consider making that one of your daily missions, and see the wonderful impact it will have on your life and health.

Last, but certainly not least, is the “Spirit”. One effective way is to perform meditation, which is what I described in my opening paragraph. Meditation teaches you how to be patient, how to reflect your troubles and worries into something pleasant for you and others, and is a different experience for every individual. It is also an effective way of teaching yourself how to focus on what is important and what is not. Most importantly though, meditation helps you discover yourself; who you really are and what your true potentials can be.

That first day of meditation really did change my life, as it was the first “exposure” to what I like to call “The World of Positivity”. Today, people see me differently and always ask me what my secret is. What you just read is my response. It is important to remember that there will always be times of difficulty, and that positive thinking will be your way out! Now the only question is, are you willing to make the change?

The Beauty Within

Sometimes, it’s hard to see the beauty in people, especially when they treat you unkindly. Forgiving is such an important character that everyone should strive to have.

This is for all of those who have hurt me in the past, intentionally, or non-intentionally; I forgive you. I forgive you, for you, and I forgive you for me.

To those whom I have hurt intentionally, or non-intentionally, I ask for your forgiveness.

Life is too beautiful to waste on pain, hurt, anger, and spite. Let’s enjoy this beauty together. Let’s enjoy the beauty within.

The Four Agreements, By Don Miguel Ruiz

January 13, 2008 - 2 Responses

My dear friend at work gave me a book today, she said it was one of her favorite books. I just started reading it, and I’m already loving it. What are the four agreements?

1. Be Impeccable With Your Word - Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

2. Don’t Take Anything Personally- Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

3. Don’t Make Assumptions- Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

4. Always Do Your Best- Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.

How many of those have you achieved?

The Room

January 9, 2008 - 2 Responses

It’s dark. The room is dark and pitch black. I look around, trying to find a way out. There is none. Somehow I realize, there is no door. There is no window. It’s just a dark, black room. I can’t see a thing. I’m calm, but I need to find a way out. I close my eyes and open them. Nothing. I feel the urge to scream, and I don’t resist. I close my eyes, and scream as loud as I can. And, with every scream, the color of the room changes with a flash. I know I’m closing my eyes, but I can still see the color of the room changing. From black it became grey, dark blue, crimson red, bright red, dark green, light green, sea blue, baby blue, light pink, lilac, and finally (when I stop screaming) white. Pure white. Suddenly, a door appears in front of me. A white door. I look to my left, and a window starts to form. Outside, there is a beautiful, blossoming tree. The sky is crystal clear, and beautifully blue. There is green grass all over the place, and a white dove flies and sits on a tree branch. It sang, and my heart sang with it. The door opens, and a bright light shines through. I look at the window, and then at the light. Which way shall I choose to go?

This is a vision that I see very often. It didn’t start off like this, but it developed into this. What do you think it means?

Pranic Healing, In Kuwait!

January 6, 2008 - 9 Responses

One morning, I was having tea with my friend at work, when May walked in. She sat down gracefully, and joined us in our conversation. Somewhere along the conversation, she mentioned that she is hosting a course on Pranic Healing. I was interested and asked her what it was about. When she explained, I grew more and more interested in learning about Pranic Healing.  Somehow, I got busy with my very busy life, and it didn’t exactly slip away from my mind, it was still there, but I sort of set it aside.  Until one day, I was walking along a corridor and a pile of dust fell right into my eyes. I got asthma all night and my eyes were red and irritated.

The next morning, I was explaining what happened to that same friend at work, and what do you know, May walks in. I told her what happened, and she told me that she could heal me. That’s when a flashback whizzed through my brain, and I remembered Pranic Healing. I began asking her more questions, and I realized what a peaceful person she is. She is so full of peace and love…I don’t know how to describe her! But she gives you a sense of serenity when she is around, and I felt good about that and decided to go to a healing session. After the session, I felt different. I won’t talk about it because I don’t want people to think that I’m advertizing here because I’m seriously not. I’m simply expressing myself in my blog, and this is truly how I feel, and truly what i experienced. I felt different. I felt like someone else. I was born again, somehow. I was a more peaceful me. I’m still who I am, but there’s something inside me that feels so good…just like that feeling of serenity I described when May walks into the room.

I told May that I will be attending the Healing Course because I want to learn to heal others too! It’s simply amazing. You can do that too by attending the Pranic Healing Course (check http://pranichealingkw.wordpress.com for the details).

Today I had another chat with May, and she told me a wonderful story, and I’m still thinking about it. I told her that I can never seem to forgive anyone who has hurt me. I do eventually, but it takes a very long time for me to do that and I would never forget if a person did something bad to me. She told me that I should try to see the good in people and to forget the bad. It’s easy to say that, I know…but actually try to do that. Eventually you will see them as good people, and you will love them, and through this love, they will change and truly become good people. For all you scientific people out there, this makes total sense, because in one of those Psychological Scientific studies, forgot which one, scientists found that if you tell a person that they’re bad, even if they’re not, eventually they become bad, and vice versa.

So from today, this is going to be my mission, to learn to forgive and forget. Afterall, I would only be harming myself with all the negativity if I decided to remember ;)

Procrastination is the Thief of Time

I’m supposed to be working on a project, but I can’t bring myself to start working. My mind keeps shifting from one thought to another. I’m waiting for something to happen, but it still hasn’t. I’ve been waiting for a while now and unsure what to do.  I guess I have to wait some more.

I’m in love with this new project that I’m working on, and I think it’s a better place for me than working as a Dietitian. This project is on Health Information Systems. It’s amazing. I love working on it, I actually enjoy it. I hope I can permanently work in this new field…let’s see…hopes up!
